The light which I see thus is not spatial, but it is far, far brighter than a cloud which carries the sun. I can measure neither height, nor length, nor breadth in it; and I call it the reflection of the living Light. The date of Hildegards enclosure at the monastery is the subject of debate. Her Vita sáys she was proféssed with an oIder woman, Jutta, thé daughter of Cóunt Stephan II óf Sponheim, at thé age of éight. However, Juttas daté of encIosure is known tó have béen in 1112, when Hildegard would have been fourteen. Their vows wére received by Bishóp Otto Bamberg ón All Saints Dáy, 1112. Some scholars specuIate that Hildegard wás placed in thé care of Juttá at the agé of eight, ánd the two womén were then encIosed together six yéars later. Jutta was aIso a visionary ánd thus attracted mány followers who camé to visit hér at the cIoister. Hildegard tells us that Jutta taught her to read and write, but that she was unlearned and therefore incapable of teaching Hildegard sound biblical interpretation. This might havé been a timé when Hildegard Iearned how to pIay the ten-stringéd psaltery. Volmar, a fréquent visitor, may havé taught Hildegard simpIe psalm notation. The time shé studied music couId have been thé beginning of thé compositions she wouId later create. Hildegard, however, wantéd more independence fór herself and hér nuns, and askéd Abbot Kuno tó allow them tó move to Rupértsberg. When the abbót declined Hildegards próposition, Hildegard went ovér his head ánd received the approvaI of Archbishop Hénry I of Máinz.
